Your road to the Golden Mile
The Goldfields guide on Perth by Paddy tells you what to do. The Kalgoorlie Pathway tells you how to do it — for your specific situation, your timeline, your budget, with warm introductions already made. That's the difference between a map and a guide who's walked the path before you.
This is not FIFO camp life. You go to work. You do a great job. You come home to your own bed. You walk Hannan Street. You get a laksa. You try the mining lifestyle on your own terms — with your own front door at the end of every shift.
Every FIFO employer in Perth wants candidates with site experience. But you can't get site experience without already being on a site. That's the loop most Irish backpackers are stuck in.
Two weeks in Kalgoorlie can break it. A shutdown gets you onto a minesite, that experience goes on your CV, and you build a relationship with an agency that knows your face. Both are genuinely worth having.
We won't oversell it. The recruiters we've spoken to say the Kalgoorlie-to-Perth-FIFO route works occasionally rather than reliably. Go to Kalgoorlie because you want to try Kalgoorlie — and if you love it, stay. The rental vacancy rate has sat below 1% since 2019 and the work is there for people who commit.

There is a whole genre of video claiming entry-level mining wages of $150,000 to $200,000 a year. We put that to a Kalgoorlie recruiter, because it is one of his biggest frustrations.

“Generally the starting rate will be around $43.50 an hour. As far as salary goes, it is very dependent on what work is available and how consistent it is. Some people arrive with an influx of others and there is very little available initially, due to how many people are here looking for the same entry level positions.”
On who earns the big numbers: “Tradespeople, skilled people — welders, fitters, mechanics, machinery operators — with prior experience in the roles.”
Quoted with permission, September 2026. The current mining award minimum, for work including shifts, weekends and public holidays, is just under $43.50/hr. Some roles without penalty work start closer to $38.
Those big figures come from salaried roster positions. A supervisor on an 8:6 roster may well earn around $150,000 a year. They are paid fortnightly and their time off is calculated into the package. That is a real job with real money — and it sits behind years of experience and a job title.
None of that applies to you at the start. At the start you are paid for each shift you work, until you land a role in a rostered position. At that stage life becomes much easier to budget and plan for.
A shift is typically 11.5 hours, and a swing is typically seven days on. Whether you get one swing next month or four depends on the month, which shutdowns are scheduled, and how many other people got off the plane the same week you did.
The single most expensive thing to get wrong, and the easiest to get right. Short-term work here runs on the shutdown calendar.

For one week each August the industry's biggest conference fills Kalgoorlie. A three-bedroom house can rent for around $2,000 a night that week.
That's not a premium you pay — it's a week you're locked out. And it falls right after the quiet June–July stretch, which is exactly when early August feels like the sensible time to arrive.
We'd rather answer this honestly than sell you something.
Start at the bottom. We'd genuinely rather you spent $19.95 and decided against Kalgoorlie than spent $450 on a plan for a trip you shouldn't take.
You don't have to move to Kalgoorlie to benefit from it. Two strategic weeks — one for reconnaissance and networking, one sitting a shutdown — and you'll have mining experience on your CV and agencies who know your name.
Be clear on what this is. It is not a guaranteed route into FIFO from Perth, and we won't pretend it is. What it does is let you try the town properly, in the right month, at low cost, without wasting the trip.
